Visitors Bureau brings tourists to Lake County
Bob Ulas, executive director of the Lake County Visitors Bureau, will discuss Lake County tourism at the March 8 Lake Communicators meeting. He will talk about Improving Lake County’s Economy and Image and How Lake County Organizations Can Help.

Before coming to Lake County in 1992, Ulas was director of communications at the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland for 10 years.

One of Ulas’s main assignments is marketing Lake County. Marketing the Lake County PerchFest is another of his main responsibilities, a yearlong process for a major special event.

Ulas participates in the Lake County Visitors Bureau Arts & Culture Sub Committee, which helps fund Lake County art and cultural events which incorporate out-of-county marketing and publicity.

Ulas handles a wide variety of projects, stakeholders and major media organizations. He attracted The Travel Channel two years ago to produce a segment on the PerchFest for “Taste of America.” It was videotaped in 2004 by a New York and L.A. production crew and talent and telecast nationally many times in 2005.

He assisted the Ohio Lottery with logistics in taping a show from Mentor and promoting Lake County statewide. Ulas submitted a winning application for Vintage Ohio as a Top 100 Event for 2006 by the American Bus Association.

He secured visits by David Brinkley of ABC News and a visit by then ABC travel editor Peter Greenburg to produce a Lake Farmpark segment. He wrote the copy and helped produce and direct an Addy award-winning television commercial for the Ohio News Network.

Ulas works with the Ohio Division of Travel and Tourism to coordinate visits by travel writers, tour operators and governor visits. He has secured speakers such as Don Shula, Bill Marriott Jr. and Mark Shapiro for the Bureau’s annual meeting. While in Cleveland, Ulas was involved with the presidential debates, the reopening of the renovated Cleveland Convention Center and All-America City presentations.

Ulas is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and a member of the Public Affairs Committee of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Marketing Consortium, Ohio Travel Association, Ohio Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus, American Bus Association, National Tour Association and Destination Marketing Association. He is a Leadership Lake County graduate and a past committee member of The Cleveland Play House Marketing Committee Advisory Council.

He has freelanced for The Plain Dealer, Cleveland Magazine and The Cleveland Press and contributed to USA Today. He also worked parttime as a reporter and announcer at WWWE Radio, (now WTAM Radio).

Ulas graduated from John Carroll University and attended Case Western Reserve University in the American Studies master’s program.

Lynne Strah is the public relations manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Ohio, a position she’s enjoyed for the past year.

Lynne earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism
from Ohio University, and began working as copywriter for a Cleveland advertising agency upon graduating. She moved into the corporate side of communications as an advertising manager for General Electric’s Lighting Business Group at Nela Park.

She has won Best In Show and Best Copywriter Awards from the Cleveland Society of Communicating Arts.

Lynne strongly believes in the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters, but has found that working for a nonprofit organization means making quite a few adjustments and creative thinking to get the simplest jobs done!

In her free time she enjoys reading and traveling. She has two children: a son who will graduate from Miami University in May and another son who is a sophomore at Ohio University majoring in telecommunications.

Board Meeting Notes from February 3rd

Treasurer Report: Budget will be brought forth in March for approval.

Membership: Dick Fraser passed out updated membership report. We have almost 60 members. Members who wished to be on certain committees were placed. Many members signed up to be on the special events committee. There will be another signup sheet at the next membership meeting to have those people sign up for their second choice.

Barbara Wiget has accepted the co-chair position for special events along with Barb Snow. Barb Snow will e-mail Tom Ruffner regarding everyone who signed up for the special events committee. At the next board meeting, chairs for each committee will be determined.

Internal Communications: Barbara Wiget and Judy Cerne were left out of the newsletter as new Board members.

Programs: Donna Robinson from The Heart of Lake County Magazine will be the April breakfast speaker. Phil Stella is slated for May, discussing a continuation of his topic last year.

Events: The possible venue for the 25th anniversary was discussed. Billy’s in the Comfort Inn is in the
running. The focus for the event will be on the history of Lake Communicators. Dick spoke about having some proclamations from area commissioners, etc. B. Wiget and B. Snow will be having a committee meeting to discuss the event.

2006 Directory: McKinney Advertising and BB/BS have bought the inside front and inside back covers of the directory. We have almost $700 in advertising to date. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 15. Skip will be providing Tom with a disc of all member pictures to be placed. The directory should end up paying for its self. It is on schedule to be passed out in March. Extra directories will be printed for future new members.

Budget: With the elimination of the photography show, $500 has been added to the 25th anniversary budget. Field trips will move to the programming budget.

The events that fall under Events are: Captains outing, holiday mixer, networking mixer and 25th anniversary party. The possibility of having two $1,000 scholarships was discussed.

We are going to hold off on a decision until we speak to the scholarship chair. A finance meeting will be held prior to the board meeting to review the 2006 budget.
