A monthly publication for members of Lake Communicators
June 2006
Professional
networker to discuss relationships |
IN THIS ISSUE
|
|
Bob
Willis is in his twelfth year as a partner
with the law firm of Petronzio Schneier in
Lyndhurst. He also has been the area director
for BNI-Business Network Int’l.
in Northeast Ohio for the past five years. In
his five years with BNI, he has helped grow the
number of chapters from three to 25.
It is in his role as area
BNI director that Bob will address the June
14 membership meeting of Lake Communicators.
We all have networks, but do we take full advantage
of them to grow our businesses? To help you
answer that question, Bob will discuss “Getting
the Highest Return on Your Relationships,” explaining
how to use our existing networks to their fullest advantage.
He also will discuss how
to focus on referral sources, rather than end
users, to maximize the limited time we all
have to promote our businesses. |
|
Since
it is so easy to get caught up in “selling,” important
distinctions will be drawn between this function
and actual networking. Ultimately, Bob will show
you how to get the highest return on your relationships.
BNI
is the world’s largest word-of-mouth referral
organization with more than 4,100 chapters worldwide.
BNI is
a business networking organization that offers
members the opportunity to share ideas, contacts,
and most importantly, referrals.
In addition to his law degree
and MBA, he is a
certified networker through BNI’s sister
company, the Certified Networker Program (CNP).
Bob grew up in Bainbridge and
resides in Aurora with his wife and two daughters. |

Moment: Barbara Snow |
Barbara
Snow started her career as a primary
grade school teacher, entering the business
world when her husband Bill opened three
Tuff-Kote Rustproofing stores. She fell in love
with
marketing and selling and returned to school.
From the automotive business,
Barbara went into
radio promotions, then into radio and television
spot sales. During a vacation, Barbara registered
for the weeklong Professional Level I series
at the Zona Spray Cooking School in Hudson. That
Tuesday, she got her hands into brioche dough
and never looked back.
She worked as director of sales
and marketing for
Baron Aviation Inc. in Cleveland, finishing the
remainder of the Professional Levels classes. After
graduating with professional honors from the Zona
Spray Cooking School, now Western Reserve School of Cooking, Barbara now teaches
culinary classes. She also teaches two writing classes at Lakeland.
|
|
Every
other year she serves as a kitchen coordinator
for the Wolfgang Puck Five-Star Sensation, the
biannual fund raiser for University Hospital
Ireland Cancer Center, which raised $1.3 million
in 2005.
She recently completed the certificate
program in
sales and marketing at the Weatherhead School
of
Management, Case Western Reserve University.
Barb is now head of marketing and development
for
Mentor Public Library. She also is the regional
spokesperson for Honeysuckle White Turkey, a
division of Cargill Meat Solutions. So, if someone
shows up at a meeting wearing a turkey suit,
you’ll know who it is. |

Heather Hill and Rose-Mary Center.
Prior to becoming director of
special giving, Holly spent seven years in the
department of institutional advancement there.
She is a six-year member of the Crossroads board
of trustees.

| New
mentoring program announced |
A
new program that will enable members to share
their unique communication experience and knowledge
is being launched. The Lake Communicators’ Mentoring
Program will provide a system in which members
with specific skills and experience can provide
free counsel and mentoring assistance to those
seeking help.
A mentor is, by definition,
a “wise and
trusted counselor.” Our group has a number
of members with valuable knowledge and experience
in specific areas of communication. Making this
resource available to those less experienced,
but needing direction, will provide an important
benefit for members.
Mentoring is a win-win situation. By sharing
our special knowledge with others, we can boost
the overall level of professionalism individually
and collectively.
The program will begin by surveying
our members to identify their own strong areas
of expertise. |
|
Advertising experience,
for example, might include research, copy writing,
media etc. A list of mentors
would then be prepared by category, with contact
information included. This list would be available
on our Web site.
Members who need help in a particular
communication area would contact the appropriate
listed mentor for assistance. The type of counsel
would be up to the two parties, with discussions
informal and considered confidential.
Do you have valuable experience
and knowledge in certain communication areas?
If so, please consider sharing it with others
in our organization. Members were invited to
join the Lake Communicators’ Mentoring
Program at the last meeting.
If you have any questions, call
committee member “Dee” Logan, an
accredited mentor of the Public Relations Society
of America, at (440) 357-4471 or return the form
distributed at the May meeting. |

| Board
meeting notes from May 5 |
Anniversary
Bash:
Past presidents will be invited. Members may bring spouses or friends. The committee
will get promotional items for the event. Shirley Wolfe will handle RSVPs. Scholarship:
Nine entries were received. Four finalists have been chosen. Oral interviews
will be done May 8. Kathie Purmal and Barb Wiget will conduct these. All schools
have been notified of their finalists.
Marketing Brochure:
The brochure is done and ready to be sent to
the printer. $650 has been allocated in the
budget for the printing. Laura Freeman will
ask Jim Jones for a quote with price breaks.
We want to have the brochure done for the anniversary
bash.
Treasurer Report:
Kathie Purmal handed out the proposed revised
budget. The special events committee will decide
if they want to do one or two networking mixers,
possibly at a member’s business. Kathie
proposed adding a budget item to host a professional
speakers program. This would be a work shop
type of program. Kathie, Skip Trombetti and
Judy Cerne are going to look into speakers.
The Board decided to allocate $1,000 for a
speaker under Programs. Barb Wiget is going
to talk to her committee about a field trip.
Programs:
Skip is going to aim for September for a work
shop speaker. July is a cookout at Lake County
Historical Society.
Apex:
The committee has been meeting. The event will
have a culinary theme. Jerie Green will be
asked to send meeting minutes to the Board.
Mentoring:
Members will be asked to offer themselves as
mentors. Diana Lewis will ask Dee Logan to
target certain members to ask if they will
be mentors.
Old Business:
Diana is going to be looking into NOCA. We need
to have new representatives. |

| New
marketing brochure available |
For
the Lake Communicators’ 25th
anniversary, the group has produced a new
marketing brochure that is available for
members to pass out to anyone interested
in learning more about the organization.
A description of what Lake Communicators is
all about and benefits of being a member are
described in the four-color brochure. Also
inside are photos , information on meetings,
membership, Apex Awards, the scholarship fund,
special events and more.
|
|
The eight-page
brochure is truly an in-house publication. Member
Judy Cerne arranged for the brochure to be designed
by McKinney Advertising & PR in Cleveland
where she is president and CEO. Member Jim Jones
at Jones Printing Service in Willoughby printed
the brochure, which easily fits into a business-size
envelope for mailing.
Pick up a handful at the next
meeting and pass them out to your marketing
and PR friends.
