July 2007
Wine, dine and socialize at Grand River Cellars |
IN THIS ISSUE
|
|
Lake Communicators is holding a special networking/social event from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17 at Grand River Cellars, 5750 Madison Road (Route 528), Madison.
This event is open to members and their guests only; cost is just $10 for delicious appetizers and one drink ticket for any of Grand River Cellars wines or beers. A cash bar will be available as well.
Appetizers will include a brie & pear tray--warm brie and sliced pears covered with a choice of caramel glaze or a blackberry, walnut and lemon glaze, and served with a warm French baguette, cheese and crackers trays, and trays of bruschetta -- freshly diced tomatoes and herbs served on ciabatta bread and covered in shredded parmesan cheese, a great complement to the wine.
The winery is beautifully decorated with ceramic tile floors, mural-painted stucco walls and plenty of seating, including a grouping of cozy couches near a gorgeous fireplace. A private party room is available for weddings as well as networking events like this one.
|
|
Lake Communicators members will be able to sip wine on the deck where flowering baskets hang from the eaves of the wooden exterior and birds chirp from nearby woods.

Grand River Cellars is just a 20-minute drive from Mentor. Follow I-90 to the Route 528 exit in Madison and turn right. The winery is about three miles south of the freeway on the west (right) side of the road. RSVP by July 11 by e-mailing Shirley Wolfe at wolfeshirley@yahoo.com. |

| Daily Show ranks as high as network news |
Which would you think has more substantive news coverage – traditional broadcast network newscasts or “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”? Would you believe the answer is neither?
Julia R. Fox, assistant professor of telecommunications at Indiana University isn’t joking when she says the popular fake news program is just as substantive as network coverage.
While much has been written in the media about the show’s impact, Fox’s study is believed to be
|
|
the first scholarly effort to systematically examine how the comedy program compares to traditional television news as a source of political information.
The study, “No Joke: A Comparison of Substance in ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’ and Broadcast Network Television Coverage of the 2004 Presidential Election Campaign,” will be published next summer by the Journal of Broadcast and Electronic Media.
The Broadcast Education Association will publish the informational study. |

| Hold the spam PR pros |
A survey of 142 journalists from newspapers, magazine and online publications show journalists often fall victim to spam e-mail from PR pros.
The number one request from journalists (52 percent) is for PR practitioners to pitch news that the journalist covers.
With 17 percent of respondents receiving over 200 press releases a week, and 33 percent receiving 100-200 a week, it’s easy to see how some journalists might feel overwhelmed and why it is important to reach the right journalist.
Some of the things PR pros can do better from the journalists perspectives are: only pitch news that the journalists cover; pitch exclusives for a few days prior to deadline; and deliver materials on time.
According to some journalists, there is no substitute for good media relations practices |
|
such as targeting journalists, knowing their beats, understanding their outlets, verifying data and building relationships.
While spam is a problem, 83 percent of journalists still choose e-mail as their preferred way of getting new releases. 42 percent prefer e-mail with attachments and 41 percent prefer e-mail with Web links.
Some things to keep in mind about pitching journalists through e-mail include: 35 percent read a news release that contains newsworthy information; 22 percent are compelled when they know the company sending the news; 17 percent read releases that look intriguing; and only 4 percent read everything they receive.
Also reporters hate pitches made by phone and they ignore faxes. However, they do get the majority of their ideas from PR pitches and press releases. So be savvy with e-mail press releases. |
