Lake Communicators July 12 meeting will focus on fun and networking between members and guests. Instead of the usual meeting site at the Comfort Inn, the July event will be held on the beautiful grounds of the Lake County History Center in Kirtland Hills.

Formerly the site of the Baldwin summer retreat called Shadybrook, the grounds now serve Lake County residents as the Lake County History Center. In addition to a barbecue picnic lunch provided by Cater To You, the gathering will feature an opportunity to tour the historic home, now a museum, and 30-acre grounds. Guests will learn more about living on Ohio’s frontier in the Jack Daniels Living History Village and for those interested in historic research, a library tour will be available.

Kathie Purmal, executive director, will be sharing some of Lake County’s heritage in the front door of the Western Reserve and Society staff will be on hand to share information about upcoming Society programs. There will also be ample opportunity for meeting and networking with Lake Communicator members.

The cost of the lunch is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Reservations should be e-mailed to wolfeshirley@yahoo.com. The Lake County History Center is located at 8610 Mentor Road (aka King Memorial Road)in Kirtland Hills, near the intersection of Little Mountain Road and King Memorial Road. From I-90 east bound, exit at #193 (Rt. 615 in Mentor, south to Chillicothe Road, left to Little Mountain Road and right on Little Mountain to King Memorial. West bound I-90, the exit is closed. West bound I-90 should exit at Route 44, north to Route 84 and follow west to King Memorial, turn left and follow to the center.) For more information call 440-255-8979.

Anniversary bash goes off with a bang

Current and former Lake Communicators members attended the 25th Anniversary Bash May 25 at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club.

President Tom Ruffner, Past President Kathie Pohl, founding member Bob Barbian and member Barb Snow competed with a heavy thunderstorm as they passed
out certificates of appreciation and door prizes, and read notes from early members unable to attend.

Lake Communicators awards three scholarships for marketing and communication students

Three Lake County students have been chosen as recipients of marketing and communication
scholarships awarded by Lake Communicators. The Scholarship Committee evaluated applicants from nine schools across the county. The scholarships were awarded to students planning to make communications central to their future plans.

The 2006 winners are Melissa Pohl of Riverside High School, Hannah DeMitta, a graduate of Willoughby South, and Caitlin Hill of Harvey High School. Melissa’s high school credits include a wide range of activities from National Honor Society and student council to Key Club and Buckeye Girls State representative. Melissa has chosen Ohio University and their business college to continue her studies wanting one day to open her own business. Melissa is the daughter of Kathie and Joe Pohl of Concord Township.

Hanna DeMitta of Eastlake left high school with a trail of honors and recognition including being a member of Leadership Lake County Youth, an officer in the National Honor Society program, a varsity tennis player for four years and recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Selected as one of the Top 10 Outstanding Seniors at Willoughby South, Hanna will attend Otterbein College where she hopes to focus on the communication skills needed in nonprofit
management so that she may use her skills to make a difference.

Recognition from teachers and peers is also found throughout the high school career of Caitlin Hill. Caitlin’s focus is on writing and she hopes to pursue a career in journalism and international impact after college. While still in high school Caitlin has presented numerous public speeches through Mock Trial, Rotary Four Way Speech Competition and four years as a class officer ending with her election as president of her senior class. Caitlin is also a member of the National Honor Society, school newspaper, Academic Challenge Team, has a varsity letter in tennis and was recognized with a Scholar-Athlete Award.

Board meeting notes from June 9

Scholarship:
Three scholarships of $500 each were presented to recipients at the respective schools by Barb Wiget, Tom Ruffner and Kathie Purmal. Nine seniors applied. Barb mentioned that other awards were at least $1,000 and maybe we should consider raising ours. Tom Ruffner suggested we review our budget each year and remain flexible from year to year and for it to be decided by the board. Judy Cerne will send a press releases about the winners. Recipients will attend the meeting; Skip Trombetti will take photos.

Membership:
The membership drive didn’t bring in any new members. We now have 58 members.

Marketing Brochure:
The board is thinking of creative ways to use the brochure. An idea is to make it available at Chambers of Commerce meetings.

Treasurer's Report:
We are $1,350 ahead in our budget, bringing in more than we spent from January-May with the 25th anniversary cost reduced to $400 from $800. The budget is to be approved next month.

Programs:
We will take a tour of Ideastream studios in September or October. We will car pool and have a box lunch from Mike’s Kitchen. We will ask for volunteers with larger cars/SUVs to drive and we will pay their mileage. Cost will be $10. Barb Snow and Barb W. and Skip will work on the November event -- some type of branding seminar with McKinney Advertising and other large or well-known agencies. This will be a prelude to bringing in a big person next year, with a goal of growing the membership.

Mentoring:
Members will be asked to offer themselves as mentors. Diana Lewis will ask Dee Logan to target certain members as mentors.

Old Business:
Diana and Barb Snow are going to be representatives for NOCA.
