How to shoot and size for print

An image can usually be summed up in a thousand words, or so the saying goes. Combine Bob Barbian, Bob Zyromski and a touch of Skip Trombetti and that image may be three, four or even five thousand words.

The Feb. 8 program will be about images. Those in the communications realm recognize the need to present images to sell, buy or enhance a presentation. These three photographers will show how to recognize an image as good, bad or ugly. Yes, even ugly images are needed in the world of presentations.

Bob Z. will lead off with a presentation on composition. He will give a broad perspective on landscapes, cityscapes and otherwise beautiful representations of what one sees.

Batting second in the line up will be Bob B. He will talk about people – the good, the bad, and the ugly (of course, not those in the room) and “what’s in” in portrait photography. This presentation will help everyone take better photos of friends, relatives, in-laws and out-laws.

Skip T. will follow with an update on equipment and what the market has to offer. He also will review new trends in printing. He won’t have time to teach operations, but will give quick tips on hardware functions. He will also touch on types of image capture, including film, the current digital craze and the increased sophistication of camera phones.

Skip Trombetti

Skip Trombetti has been doing professional photography in the Cleveland area for more than 15 years. He also owns Van’s Photo in Mentor.

Bob Barbian
Robert Barbian opened his studio in downtown Painesville in 1962. He specializes in school and wedding photography and has photographed more than 1.5 million school children in three counties along with more than 4,000 weddings. The studio has won several awards for school photography and civic achievements.

Barbian was official team photographer for the Cleveland Force pro soccer team from 1980-87, attending more than 300 games at the Richfield Coliseum with the help of Bob Zyromski. Barbian was one of five original charter members of LCPC in 1980.

Bob Zyromski
A longtime professional photographer, Bob Zyromski has been Lake County YMCA director of communications since 1982. He is responsible for membership, marketing and communications, including Dream House promotion and photo and video production.

Bob has won an Association for Multi-Image “Best of Cleveland” award, an Apex Gold Award in photography, and other awards. Since his teens, Bob has photographed extensively in Poland, Sweden, Mexico and all over the U.S.

He has taught photography at Lake Erie College, Holden Arboretum and independently, and has judged numerous photo contests. His experience includes candid, sports, architectural, product, industrial, portrait, scenic, theatre and dance photography.

Board Meeting Notes from Jan. 6

Tom Ruffner began the 2006 meeting year reminding board members to have fun and enjoy being part of Lake Communicators. Kathie Purmal, treasurer, presented 2005 year-end budget numbers and a proposed 2006 budget. Board members are to review the new budget and discuss at the February meeting.

Committee Reports: Tom noted that committees may change duties and responsibilities from past definitions and that all committees must have a board liaison, but board members did not necessarily have to chair the committee on which they sat. Agreement was reached that board members would invite Lake Communicator members to join their committee at the January lunch meeting with signup information being created by Barbara Snow. Members not in attendance would be contacted by phone regarding a committee choice.

A seventh committee was added, “Special Events” with its primary responsibility being the 25th anniversary year celebration for Lake Communicators.

Committee Liaisons for 2006 will be: Marketing and Promotions- Judy Cerne; Special Events- Barbara Wiget and Barbara Snow; Scholarship- Kathie Purmal; Apex Awards- Dick Fraser; Programs- Skip Trombetti; Internal Communications- Tom Ruffner; and Membership- Jessica Raymond.

Programs: Skip Trombetti reported that the agenda is not set for the entire year and he would seek more speakers.

Membership: Dick Fraser reported the current membership to be approximately 51 members with an increasing number of multiple memberships coming in early in 2006. Dick also reminded board members that dues must be in by Feb. 1 to be in the Lake Communicator directory.

Internal Communications: Tom Ruffner reported he would be working on the membership-marketing brochure with Judy Cerne. Tom also announced that the 2006 directory would be full-color, stitched, with a half-page profile for each member.

The cost of the directory would be underwritten by ads purchased by Lake Communicator members. A full-page ad is $75 and a half-page $50. The deadline to secure a spot in the directory is Feb. 1.
