November 14th: Replaces Lunch Meeting
Holiday after hours event
|
IN THIS ISSUE
|
|
We've had frigid temperatures and two snowfalls, Thanksgiving is long gone and Christmas is right around the corner. That can only mean one thing. It's time to party!
In place of our regular lunch meeting this month, the Membership Committee has arranged a special Holiday after Hours from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14. The cost, of just $10 per person, will cover a bounty of delicious hors d'oeuvres. All beverages will be on your own. Members and their guests are welcome.
So come out to the local landmark, The Cabin, located on Lakeshore Boulevard in Willowick. It's easy to get to... exit Rout 2 at Lloyd Road, go

north to Lakeshore and turn right. The Cabin will be down the road a bit, on the right hand side. The entrance is in the front. Bring your business cards to network and enter the drawing for a plethora of door prizes (you must be present to win).
Reservations are required by Friday, Dec. 9th by calling Diana Lewis at (440) 255-8932 or e-mailing Shirley Wolfe at wolfeshirley@yahoo.com. We hope to see you at The Cabin on December 14th.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

| Lake Communicators' listserve now available |
For many, e-mail has replaced the phone as the preferred manner of communicating with business associates, friends, and family. Now there's one more tool to make conducting business over the Internet even easier. It's called the listserve.
Here are some reasons why you need listserve. You're in the midst of a communications crisis and want feedback from another professional. Your printer dies and you need to know who has a compatible model or you have some new industry information you'd like to share. In each of these scenarios, you would simply send an e-mail to the "list" which, in this case, would include only Lake Communicators' members. It's automatic. There's no need to set up a database or an address book with 50 addresses. It's almost like instant messaging. |
|
To receive this new member benefit, you first need to create your own ID. Kathy Walker, our new webmaster, has volunteered to serve as our listserve administrator and will ensure that only Lake Communicators' members sign up for this listserve.
The listserve is set up through Yahoo! Groups (click here to visit the group). You will have to create a Yahoo ID to use their group software; however, you do not have to use this ID for your e-mail from the group; you can specify your current e-mail address. When you join the Yahoo group, you will be prompted to enter in a Yahoo ID. If you do not have an existing Yahoo ID, the group join process will help you create one. Contact Kathy Walker at kathyvirgw@yahoo.com if you have any problems joining the new listserve. |

| November meeting recap... |
Bruce Hennes, president of Hennes Communications, a crisis communication, media training, media relations and litigation communications firm, spoke on the topic of Crisis Communications: Managing the Media. Businesses can face a service interruption, serious lawsuit, a product liability action, EEOC complaint, devastating fire, a tornado or other natural disaster. It has been said that it takes a lifetime to build a reputation and only seconds to destroy it. The same is true for a business, no matter if you have one or 1,000 employees. Expressing concern, providing accurate information and staying in touch with victims, employees, customers, bankers and suppliers can be accomplished through various channels: phone, e-mail, Internet and, often via television, radio and newspaper.
Here are 10 steps to take BEFORE a crisis occurs:
- Anticipate potential crisis scenarios within your company and prepare key message responses.
- Have a media-trained, designated spokesperson.
- Prepare to reach key personnel with current office, home, cell and e-mail information.
- Prepare basic background material on your company and its key employees.
- Develop a media distribution list with current names, phone, fax, e-mail and cell phone information.
- Identify your target audience (i.e. employees and their families, vendors, customers, stockholders, labor leaders, local government officials, etc.).
- Develop a written crisis response plan.
|
|
- Develop a relationship with the media and other third parties.
- Conduct a mock drill.
- Revisit your plan on a regular basis.
Ten steps to take WHEN a crisis occurs:
- Assemble the crisis team and refer to your prepared plan.
- Analyze the situation promptly but don't overanalyze.
- Prioritize your target audiences.
- Develop and/or refine your key message. Agree to an interview so you can get your message out.
- Communicate a consistent, simple and clear message.
- Set up a place for the media to gather. Meeting with the press off-site can help you control the message and the situation.
- Provide a steady stream of communication to the media and other target audiences.
- Assign someone to monitor the mass media and Web so you can quickly respond to inaccurate information.
- Make the media your partner, not your enemy. If you stonewall, they'll dig.
- Conduct a follow-up evaluation of your efforts after the crisis abates.
