The 2005 Lake County Apex Awards were presented Oct. 12 at the Fine Arts Association in Willoughby. Local marketing professionals answered the call for entries with their best work in tune with this year's theme, "Show Us Your Super Stuff."
Creative people, including graphic artists, website designers, photographers and copywriters showed up in their hightly polished boots and freshly dry-cleaned capes (or best business attire), for the awards ceremony.
Apex Awards were given in 15 categories, including illustration, photography, copywriting, publicity and special events, publications and collateral materials.
This is the first year Lake Communicators presented The News-Herald Public Information Award to honor the best individual, corporate or not-for-profit agency who produced a single piece or entire campaign with public information as its sole objective. Winners of this first-time award are Lake Metroparks and McKinney Advertising & Public Relations.
College and high school students in their junior or senior year were invited to submit entries free. Student awards were judged based on the merits of amateur efforts. Ashland University student Maria Iafelice of Wickliffe cam in first place for her graphic design piece titled "90,000."
Lake Communicators, an organization formed in 1981 for those in the advertising, publishing, graphic design, photography and public relations fields, sponsor the Apex Awards. Co-sponsors were the Fine Arts Association, Villa Beach Communications, Lakeland Community College, Xpedx Paper & Graphics, Duke Printing Mailing Solutions, the Lake County Business Journal, Thom Zahler Art Studios, The News-Herald and Jones Printing Services, Inc. Promotional art was created by Thom Zahler.
